Province of Pisa.
After leaving the breathtaking fairy like medieval town of San Gimignano and its lovely hosts Maggie, Daniella and Marco, our next destination……The place where a 14th century tower has a tilt. Pisa, Tuscany, Italy.
The road to Pisa was as picturesque as you could imagine. And the drive was just over an hour and a half making it the perfect stop on the way to Cinque Terra. We also found a parking spot fairly easy and close to the historic site.
It was just a short walk before entering the Piazza dei Miracoli. With at least a few hours allocated for our visit we decided to grab a cappuccino and a rest at Ristorante Pizzeria Duomo. The waiters were handsome and very sweet. And it turned out, the food was delicious too.
Pisa was a delightful experience. The energy within the Piazza was alive yet peaceful. While impressive soldiers stood guard at the Tower, euphoric crowds marveled at its artistic beauty. I was so intimidated by the size of the monuments, I felt breathless at times.
The first picture featured is the Fontana dei Putti ( The Fountain with Angels). Sculpted by Giovanni Antonio Cybei, the beautiful marble fountain was fully functional in the 17th century and was used as a source of water for local citizens before the days when every home had running water.
The second and third photo is of course the most famous of the monuments in the Field of Miracles, The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Most of you know the history of this landmark but what I didn’t know is that there are many buildings and homes in the surrounding city that lean in every direction as well.
The last 6 photos are different angles of the grandiose Cathedral of Pisa and the Baptistery of St. John.
As our visit came to a close, we decided to purchase some souvenirs at a kiosk and gift shop located within the Piazza.
After having a bite to eat, we were ready to hit the road to our next destination…………..Cinque Terra.
